A major part of my work deals directly with community. The local market/ bodega/ tiendita is a crucial part of our lives. It’s a place where you can buy groceries, get batteries, purchase a calling card for your family in another country, buy Mexican candy, pay a bill, buy a 40 oz for your uncle. It’s cultural. As society progresses and gentrification expands we are losing these cultural hubs that raised me and people like me. My subject in this work is born in Los Angeles. She shared with me her love for authentic LA, memories of her neighborhood in Venice, and our mutual love for the local market.

Eric Mancha is a multidimensional Contemporary Artist and Painter with cross-cultural creations blending American and Chicano traditions, culture, fashion and entertainment across the world. Mancha’s artistic roots come from his rich Mexican-American heritage. As first generation born in America he learned at a very early age the value of hard work in the mostly working class city of Eagle Pass, Texas - a small border town located one mile away from Piedras Negras, Mexico and bordering a Native American reservation. His early interest in drawing led his mother to enroll him in oil paintings lessons, largely consisting of traditional landscapes and classical figurative styles. In 2003 Mancha moved from Texas to Los Angeles after graduating from high school in the Dallas Fort Worth area and studied at Gnomon School of Visual Design where he received his professional certification in visual effects to launch his film career. The use of color and composition to tell stories through the medium of visual effects eventually inspired Mancha to reapproach his original vision of painting as his list of credits grew. The passion for artistic excellence is clear and constant in Mancha’s work, “I love the art of storytelling; color and how it is used to express emotion and space”. Inspired by the Los Angeles landscape, he revived his love for painting and embraced the influence of culture, architecture and color in the neighborhoods most parallel to his upbringing. Heavily influenced by the New York School of abstraction, Mancha was inspired to revert back to his schooling in landscape painting to deconstruct those neighborhoods through an abstract interpretation. His focused collection of work is his vision of West Coast Abstraction.
