Gautam Pal Visual Artist | Abstract Painter Kolkata, India Gautam Pal is a Kolkata-based visual artist whose practice explores abstraction as a reflection of the uncertainty and rhythm of human existence. Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, he developed an early interest in poetry, drawing, and music. He completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A.) from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, under the University of Calcutta, in 1990. Following his academic training, Pal worked as an Illustrator and Visualizer with Ogilvy & Mather from 1991 to 1998. In 1998, he joined a Government B.Ed. College as Treasurer. During this period, the personal loss of his father and exposure to social and institutional injustice profoundly shaped his artistic consciousness. These experiences led him to study Eastern and Western philosophy extensively and marked a decisive turn in his artistic direction. His early body of work evolved as protest art under the mission “The Dark Quest,” addressing the moral and social contradictions of contemporary society. Over time, his vision expanded to acknowledge the coexistence of light and darkness as essential forces of life. This philosophical shift became central to his abstract language. Pal views painting as a spontaneous and organic phenomenon—comparable to the poetry of an unplanned dream. He believes abstraction, when practiced with integrity, is the most honest means of expressing an artist’s inner vitality and the uncertainty of lived experience. For him, painting is not premeditated but occurs as an unpredictable event shaped by perception, time, and inner conflict. Subsequent thematic missions such as “Life on Earth,” “Waves of Life,” and “Life Is a Festival” reflect his evolving understanding of existence as a continuous interplay of struggle and celebration. His works engage with themes of survival, superstition, human selfishness, religious intolerance, and the fragile balance of life, while remaining deeply rooted in Indian culture, values, and philosophical thought. Pal’s artistic influences include Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Rabindranath Tagore. His paintings are characterized by spontaneous linear forms, expressive use of color, and an abstract vocabulary that mirrors the unpredictability of life itself.
