120 x 180 x 3 cm Each Panel The composition of ‘The New Monkey’ painting is made from fragments of found photography from 2004, in which were taken from a closed down Night club in North East England. A venue which was named The New Monkey, this club became a rite of passage for many young working class youths in the area, and it was a community open to them every Saturday night. This venue didn’t only bring a new genre of music to scene (a form of Spanish techno, called Makina), but it brought together a platform for self-expression and a community for these individuals. This particular painting looks strongly into the common link between class and taste, all the while commenting on the importance of the music that has built a platform for expression within working class society of the North East. The composition and use of flat line to break up the detail within the painting, using the busy composition of figures depicted to show community and belonging. The Spray painted symbol of the Monkey tags the painting with the genre of music and is central in the piece to show its importance to these individuals depicted right above it. All the while, Danielle keeps everything within this piece as authentic as possible, the flat colour being exactly like the venue had inside, to the exact clothing individuals who attended these events wore. She wanted to recreate a moment in time as it would have been. Celebrating this environment through the use of realness within her painting. Sharing that once shared existence of this venue.

Danielle Metcalfe-Shaw’s work derives from memories, art history and contemporary life. Life sized moments and the subjects which present themselves in the works, are the driving force to her practice. The Artist has always had a keen eye for portraiture, her current work has found a love for large flat plane shapes of colour – Now colourful, symbolic and compositional interior elements are the driving force of the painted image, but the complex interweaving of figures remains a common thread. Today her Subjects are depicted in a realistic manner often using figures drawn from her own personal archives. The Artists Subjects are captured in moments of intimacy whether that maybe the privacy of their own home, or an interior space to the closeness of communicating with one’s friends. Danielle uses saturated and vibrant colour, removing shadows to heighten both her their stylized and disconnect from reality, translating the three-dimensional world into block colour and flat lines, all the while retaining the complexity of the image.
