ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting was inspired by a small painting by G.B. Tiepolo called ‘The Virgin with Six Saints’, as well as a children’s story called Elmer the Elephant. There is a beautiful passage where Elmer describes that the act of giving is infinite: “But Elmer”, said an Elephant, “You gave your colours to the rainbow. How can you still have them?” Elmer chuckled, “Some things you can give and give and not lose any. Things like happiness or love or my colours.” I decided to make the painting diptych playing on the idea of separation and union. Again, I wanted to emphasise the notion of the fleeting moment by incorporating the rainbow and a hummingbird to the left of the composition. The virgin by contrast represents something ever lasting as she presides over the events happening beneath her.

Simon Boyd
Argentina
Simon Boyd, born in London 1978, studied Fine Art at Middlesex, 1997-2001. He has lived in Argentina since 2007. Simon has held solo shows in both Argentina and the UK; ‘The Jousters Banquet’ at the British Arts Centre, Buenos Aires, in 2009 and ‘Also Light…’ at Anteros Arts Foundation, Norwich, 2023 to name a few. He has also participated in the International Contemporary Art Biennial, Buenos Aires, in 2016. A key inspiration for the colour and depth of his work is the South American landscape of La Pampa. Simon's use of palette echoes the sense of vitality and purity the landscape there evokes.
