Demetris Neokleous’paintings invites viewers to take a fresh look at how a city against a city might appear. Utopian and not, a sort of urban anti-polis imagined almost in illustration, spurts exorbitant paint, reflective, in a particular way, of its own medium and meanings. The closer we get to the detail of the city structures, the clearer our vision seems of this almost third dimensional place of inhabitance. But this works as another illusion; a moment of magic captured. Its intentional super flat surface, resembling an illustration print, juxtaposes a third dimension, which remains suggestive only. In the sensible mood of a graphic image, the animated outburst of a vibrant playfulness brings to light possibilities encountered in spaces where celebrative moments of everyday happiness are promised in the face of dark, black and white representations of post-modern and industrial life. Once again, the artist creates a familiar atmosphere as experienced in his other works, where freedom matters wherever there is life, and wherever we live, we strive to be free.
