During a trip to Morocco in the blistering heat of summer, I became obsessed with the abstract shapes and slashes of brilliant blue sky that I would glimpse beyond the densely packed jumble of rooftops. I found it striking that the same element that I see every day could seem so different when viewed in another place and context. This difference in visual perspective seemed to echo the contrasting spiritual and cultural perspectives that I encountered in this very different part of the world. The same sky Made unfamiliar Reshaped By exotic angles. Narrow slivers Of brilliant blue Framed By crumbling rooftops. Pierced By soaring minarets, Heavy with prayers In unknown tongues. The same sky Of my childhood summers Redrawn In nameless shapes. The artwork is shipped along with a copy of the above poem.

I am originally from Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, and have a diverse creative background spanning professional work as a musician, designer, artist and educator. As an artist, my work is broadly focused on people and place. Inspiration comes from travels in the Middle East and North Africa, plus my longstanding interest in conflict and peacebuilding. My mixed media approach uses collage, acrylics, ink and chalk pastels and fuses realistic and abstract elements to suggest the history and stories that lie beneath the surface of a place.
