ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Shape of Perfume series Obscure, obscured, memories, intentions indiscernible, floating beyond reach, ephemeral. The paintings in this series are many layered, painted over years, with older drawings and paintings below the surface, some of which are visible, others not. Accessing the deep and subconscious dreams and desires that perfume and scent awakens. Acrylic paint, iridescent gold pigment. Parts of the painting are made with gold pigments with some overpainting, and will reflect the light and change its appearance as you move around it. Inspired by a visit to the ancient frescoes on the wall of the Chapter House at Westminster Abbey, of which only small remnants are visible, Also by the history of perfume, its links with medicine and science, theology and culture and Marcel Proust's 'À la recherche du temps perdu' The painting is on stretched paper treated with layers of varnish to give a surface sheen and protect the paint.

My painting is bound up with examination of the land, and in particular, the ephemeral, those forces and presences that cannot be seen but which change and shape the land. The work has taken me to a range of habitats to examine them in new ways and consider how each small part of our upland and lowland environment affects larger systems. I have a Master of Art (Fine Art) and BA Honours Degree in Fine Art from Manchester School of Art. Career highlights have included being selected for the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolour exhibition, Mall Galleries, (2024, 2023), ING Discerning Eye exhibition (2022) Sunday Times Watercolour competition (2020) and making live ice installations at the Whitworth Gallery and Victoria Baths Manchester.
