About The Artwork

Pandora’s Box is a myth written by Hesiod, a misogynistic man. It was based on earlier stories in which Pandora was a Great Mother Goddess, an embodiment of mother nature. Pandora means “bearer of all gifts”. Hesiod inverts the story. Pandora first appears in writing in Hesiod’s Work and Days. Hesiod’s poems are generally considered to be the “Genesis” of Greek Mythology. Pandora is the Eve of Greek mythology. Eve has her apple, Pandora has her box. Both are curious, seeking knowledge, and release all types of misery upon mankind. They, and their female descendants, are punished with difficulty in childbirth and domination by their fathers and husbands. Jane Ellen Harrison writes that Hesiod's story provides "evidence of a shift from matriarchy to patriarchy in Greek culture. As the life-bringing goddess Pandora is eclipsed, the death-bringing human Pandora arises." Harrison concludes, "in the patriarchal mythology of Hesiod her great figure is strangely changed and diminished. She is no longer Earth-Born, but the creature, the handiwork of Olympian Zeus." Robert Graves, quoting Harrison, of Hesiod’s story, that "Pandora is not a genuine myth, but an anti-feminist fable, probably of his own invention.” More details: https://echoingmultiverse.blogspot.com/2023/05/the-story-of-hesiod-and-pandora.html
