My father has advanced dementia and as his memory fails, I cling to my own memories of being a cherished and carefree child. In creating these paintings, I revisit my experience as a daughter. I find now that everything matters, and nothing matters. One learns that all that glitters is inexorably fleeting. Honest reflections of the utility and futility of things is articulated in the work. Decay and age are effortlessly juxtaposed with gilded perfection in this striking new collection. From stark black and white to limited palettes to positively colourific, it’s all here. I invite you to enjoy the work. Thank you.

Aadila Munshi is a contemporary artist living in Toronto, Canada. She is known for her painted abstractions of distressed urban environments. Fascinating urban textures and grunge are uniquely contrasted with soft, elegant marks and letters. Composed intuitively, her abstract expressions emerge as visual representations of her perception of the push and pull between struggle, hope, and the ability to rise above. A former Criminologist, Aadila grew up in South Africa during the apartheid regime. She studied painting in the studio of a local artist in her town. In 2000, she moved to Toronto permanently, where she studied further at the Toronto School of Art and established her painting practice. Relocating third world sensibilities to the first world strongly informs her work.
