The Wicked Witch is Dead Painting

An homage to Hitchcock's the Trouble with Harry, Dorothy, modeled off of an adorable one year old, stands curiously over the dead witch, with her animal companion Toto by her side. Before I painted this piece I was in a creative rut/slump. Being a relatively new parent comes with a whole basket of challenges one of which is time management, so I've been trying to juggle raising a little one while maintaining the house, as well as, working, and still finding the time to paint. Needless to say I now have the perfect muse for Dorothy. With a wealth of intense expressions and a vivaciously curious personality I would be lucky if I managed to capture half of my daughter's personality. I've always loved, Swedish painter, Carl Larsson, for his homespun depictions of his families life and the people around him. I love the idea of being able to utilize my surroundings in my work, in some form or other. With this piece I was really able to focus on telling a story, Dorothy discovering the dead witch. She has zero concepts at this point what death is, and that she is responsible. She's coming on this scene with no clue, just oodles of curiosity, and Toto is, pretty much in the same boat, as her. Toto is very hesitant and just as innocent as Dorothy. They're two souls exploring life together, going on an adventure, a very lighthearted experience, because of their innocence.
