Egg tempera painting style is what i do in un orthodox Iconography, Mary Jane Miller, like many others attempt to paint what we cannot see. Our theological and spiritual insights have been handed down over many generations. What often inspires her about icon painting is the million-year-old dirt; ancient stone pigments traditionally used by Byzantine iconographers. The earth was divinely created, and it governs a wide array of texture and color in icon painting. These women stand in fear of something they cannot see, like to Covid, the pandemic is the unknown being revealed and discovered every day. All of life comes from the unseen energy of God, only to be seen in color and formed in creation.

Mary Jane Miller has been a full-time artist dedicated to iconography for over 30 years in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She paints and teaches the ancient Byzantine-style art of Icon writing as a prayer form. Her understanding of its spiritual symbolic language and her dedicated skill result in an experience that is deeply meditative as well as artistic. She teaches using the traditional medium of egg tempera, hand-tooled pewter, and gold leaf. Her magnificent and unique studio in Mexico is open by appointment.
