As an avid hiker, I recently began to see the world and my surroundings with a myopic eye: instead of seeing the landscape as a whole, I started noticing the beauty in the details: stone and granite, oceans and lakes, grasses and moss. Playing with a variety of paints and natural elements I create elegant multi-layered, mixed media artwork. Transparent layers entrap movement underneath, and the minerals dry and crystalize to create an ice like textural surface. Before sealing with a gloss varnish I strive to capture the essence of our natural environment. In today's busy world I think it is more important than ever to exalt the beauty in nature and bring it into our homes and offices.

I consider myself an alchemist on canvas. With an experimental approach and a variety of organic and inorganic elements: oils and water media, salts and minerals, earth pigments, solvents, polymers and metals, I pour, layer and etch away to give the work detail and depth and explore the patterning created as materials pool in liquid, ripple in solvents, and dry and crystallize. I strive to create work that is ephemeral and evocative, to embrace the fragility of the earth and bring its beauty into our everyday lives. The initial impetus is capturing the essence of nature, but ultimately, it’s about taking and relinquishing control— knowing how to push the materials and when to acquiesce and let them find their own way. Guiding is important, but sometimes the most wonderful things happen when we let go. Sheryl Daane Chesnut currently lives and works in San Luis Obispo, CA.
