ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What if everyone from the day they were born had one piece of paper assigned to them and for each experience they had a drawing was made, one on top of the other, creating a complete visual impression of the complexity of human existence? Here I am working in a multitude of layers, rubbing back and working over. With the fluidity of the charcoal medium, I am able to go on a spiritual journey to understand the temporary nature of our existence. The decision to rub away a drawing I have already completed, and drawing something else over the top, physically allows me to let go of certain life situations and actively choose to replace it with something new. The process becomes more important than the outcome. This work was deeply influenced by Jenny Saville and Francis Bacon.

Abi Joy Samuel (b.1993) is a non-binary British Jewish artist based in London. Their work mainly uses the figure as a means of exploring the complexity of human nature with oils, charcoal and pastel. Abi goes on a spiritual process of letting go, and recreating, a metaphor for the temporary nature of our existence, and the beauty of being able to start over through multiple layers. Their aesthetic captures both the dark and the sublime, strongly influenced by her experience working as the creative assistant for McQ Alexander McQueen. After completing their studies at Central Saint Martins and a degree in fashion design, they had their first solo show where their work was picked up by an art critic from The New York Times. In 2019, they were awarded the Lexus Prize at the Hampstead Art Fair. Abi is now represented by two galleries 'Sala de Arte' in Aruba and 'Cicek Gallery' based in London.
