When talking about abstract art, I often compare it to poetry. Like poets, us painters take the familiar and present it to you in a way that invites you to engage. In this series, I'm layering bits of shells, bark from trees and lines from the light on the ocean to share my reverence for the West Coast landscape. All of this comes together through my abstract (or poetic) heart.

Marlene Lowden primarily works in oil and creates large expressive paintings on canvas. She grew up in an oceanside rural town outside of Vancouver, Canada. After several years in television broadcasting, she resumed her lifelong interest in painting, drawing, and photography. She draws from her experience in video production, applying to canvas similar principles of composition and storytelling. While working and raising her two daughters, she studied with a range of instructors learning watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting techniques. Marlene is now a painter and facilitator. She is a proud alumni of Thrive Art Studios, an international collective of female artists. She worked in partnership with Place des Arts in British Columbia and Art Girl Rising to produce videos to encourage people to create art at home during the early months of the pandemic. In 2021, she was named one of 28 contemporary Canadian artists to know by Create Magazine and is honoured to be included in the All She Makes curated artist directory and the 4th Edition of their magazine. Her work was also featured in Art Seen magazine published by the Curator’s Salon in the UK. She lives and works in her hometown of Gibsons, BC Canada.
