This painting reimagines the experience of sitting in a field of wildflowers that has been left to grow and thrive. Wild, open spaces are increasingly uncommon. As a child I was lucky enough to enjoy the English countryside which instilled in me a sense of freedom and calm. In this painting I wanted...

Originally from the United Kingdom, I have lived in Hong Kong since January 2015. Art, in all forms, has always been an important part of my life; initially through dance and theatre, and more recently through writing and painting. Art helps me to express what matters to me most, find balance, and feel connected. I started painting as a way to relax. I am a self-taught artist, and I paint mostly with acrylic on canvas. I love the spontaneity and fluidity of acrylic paint, and I use a range of tools to apply it to the canvas. I also mix different mediums with the paint to alter the way that it behaves. My artwork style is abstract and abstract expressionist. My favourite artists include Mark Bradford, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock. I find much of my inspiration for my artworks in nature. I am fascinated by what we ‘see’ (at any given time) as being the product of many things unseen, and the ways in which we try to connect with the world around us. In my paintings, I like to build layers. These layers may comprise similar colours, shades, and techniques, or may be very different to each other. What is ultimately ‘seen’ in finished painting is the product of its individual layers, even though it may be difficult to perceive those individual layers distinctly. The depth and variety of colour and texture in my artwork invites the viewer to come closer, alter their perspective and find connection. Some of my artworks feature original poetry written in braille code. These pieces aim to explore the barriers (within and without) that impair our ability to connect, and the extent to which connection is linked with vulnerability. For me, the joy of abstract art lies in the freedom of interpretation of the viewer. I hope that when people view my paintings, they feel a deeper connection with the world around them and their place within it.
