Torture Garden 50cm x 70cm oils & goldleaf on canvas. Worked from cherished photo. The world’s leading Fetish Club. A large part of my life from 2007-17. It was a revelation to me! I’d always hated night clubs, drunken macho meat markets with a lack of respect bordering on the illegal. I thought it must me and my severe social anxiety, everyone else seemed to love them!? Then at 40 years old I discovered TG. The ‘vanilla’ person has a distorted view of what these places are like and why should they be able to understand what they don’t need or require? The people I met were respectful intelligent and above all, sexy! All on their own little quests to find what they needed, just like me... the entire lack of an alcoholic culture was also like a palpable relief. I even liked the music. There is an understanding and etiquette adhered to in these places that the ‘tourists’ will never understand. Unfortunately due to its own huge success, the leering ‘tourists’ were sure to follow, and they did. But it remains an enduring success and long may it continue... What is it every artist is trying to achieve? Recognition? Perfection? Fame? Wealth?... Or are they trying to convey something of themselves? To understand the inner workings of what it is to be a human and how that manifests into the people and the world around them? What shall I paint? Do I try to convey a message? Symbolism? Allegory? A legend? A myth? A story? All questions every artist since the cave has been grappling with and no doubt will continue to do so ad infinitum. My ancestors painted religion, I consider myself to be currently painting that which has replaced it in the age of nihilism, narcissism, identity & sexuality. So I'm trying to paint something that challenges the viewer, that dances on the edge of socially and culturally acceptable. Dares the observer to step outside of convention, to hang one of my paintings is going to require something other than just money, something more important than money... you won't see one of my paintings in the high street gallery!
