Trace Mountain - Entanglement Painting

When Newton formulated his theories (‘laws’) of motion, they were accurate for the world he lived in – the ‘macro’ world we see every day. Newton’s laws were subsequently found not to apply to the sub-microscopic world of atoms and particles. Quantum mechanical theories were developed that more accurately represent what happens at that invisible level. However, Quantum mechanics must explain what happens in the real world. The same forces that form and move mountains also work within atoms and in the particles streaming from stars. This work has a dual aspect. On one level it is a snowy mountainscape. A closer look shows it is also a stylized representation of a graph - a spectrograph – that shows the emission spectrum of a star. These spectra are the signature of a star, showing its composition. Spectra decay over time and this has been built in to the artwork. On the horizontal scale of a spectra is wavelength of light emitted by the star, increasing from left to right and (corresponding to particular electrons within different elements transitioning between different states) while the vertical scale shows the intensity or ‘flux’ of these wavelengths and therefore the relative proportions of these elements.
