Third work in the Tree of Life series of canvases, The tree by its inner chemistry, its biological life, the tree by the stump which testifies to the powerful persistence of time. The inspiration came to me from the many stumps of multi-millennial trees seen in the temple gardens of Kyoto. Symbol of permanence, of what was and what remains, in the humility of this foundation, of this hold in the earth, past aerial life has given way to interior life, the stump diffuses life, breathes its breath in the underground strata, The stump and its magnificence with this epidermis with multiple nooks and folds, with thwarted, ribbed, uneven directions.
