Holland at its most beautiful. I often get inspired by the Dutch landscape during my many walks. Regularly I return to my favorite views to paint them en plein air. The challenge is to capture the essence outside in the elements and with continuously changing light on the canvas. A gently babbling b...

About the Artist

Margot Maaskant

Addicted to painting, I have to create, every day, every hour. Smearing paint is fun! Everything I paint is a reflection of my soul, it feels good to create something that was never there before and that no one else can do like I can. It is nice to be working with oil paint, directing the material in just the right direction to create the image I envision, colorful and expressive. Playing with paint, brushes, foils and whatever else is available to create a new image. Discovering, inventing, coming up with new variations. That is exciting and often happens naturally, that is flow.
Each painting is colorful, personal, impressionistic, expressive, realistic. Inspired by nature and viewed from surprising perspectives. The urge to experiment, innovate, reinvent myself and work from my heart and soul is visible in the development I go through as an artist.
Besides painting, cycling is my great passion. Freedom, being outside, seeing the landscape I love to paint pass by, being in the middle of it. The wind through my hair, the sun on my face, a fly in my eye, clouds above my head. My thoughts run wild, anything goes in those moments and my mind fills with the most diverse ideas for paintings.
Farmers harvesting, sowing and fertilizing their land. Trees with their leaves coming back, the early green of spring, a bird singing its song in a tree. Drops of dew or rain that reflect the sunlight so beautifully. The world ablaze with autumn colors, falling leaves, the most delicious scents filling the forests. Flowers in roadsides and on dikes, running water, a boat that sails, I cycle and get inspired.
Along the way, a stack of colors, tones, touches, light and shadow arise in my mind. Later, in my studio, they form a new reality on canvas. I arrange and rearrange various visual elements until the composition is to my liking, playing with color in search of balance without dullness. There is a balance and right tension in every painting.
