About The Artwork

I have a great love of domestic cats, I am uncertain where this comes from, in my youth the family had a tabby cat called ‘Teri’ [People from Hawick, where I lived for the latter part of my youth, call themselves "Teries", after a traditional song which includes the line "Teribus ye teri odin"]. The cat had to be put to sleep at an early age, it developed cancer, and we had it for about a week before my dad took it back to the vet and during this period I remember it lying for long period on my lap as I stroked it. I was about seven or eight at the time and perhaps my memories have been romanticised over time but as I near the other end of my life but I am happy with these memories and the pleasure cats bring me. Aligned to this early memory is of course the independent nature of cats which I like and the fact that a cat chooses spend time with you, yes I feed them but it still makes a choice, there seems to be something in their nature that is born between any sentient beings which co-exist, whether human or not. As an artist the contradiction between anthropomorphism and whether human ‘qualities’ are perhaps not as exclusive as we imagine and that some things like loneliness, affection, companionship etc are not the exclusive to humans but are born in the act of cohabitation between many sentient beings.

I love making things which reflect my life and my exploration of my beliefs and my place in this universe. I was asked the other day for three words to descried myself, I came up with Ukulele, Doodle and Life.
