--This is one half of a work intended to be displayed as a diptych. It is offered here individually to provide a wider array of print options. Please see my Gallery for the other half of this work.-- Subject: El Barranco, Cuenca, Ecuador Description: This work depicts a set of views of El Barranco in Cuenca Ecuador - La Escalinata Juana de Oro and El Puente Vivas Nos Queremos. The diptych presents a study in contrast between the dense built environment of the hillside and the lush retreat of the river banks. The juxtaposition speaks to the relationship and inherent tension between the built and natural environment. Natural elements are rendered in full color and built elements in stark monochrome, illustrating the interplay between these forces. Cuenca is known for its rivers that crisscross the city bringing water and life. The banks of the Tomebamba are planted with native plants and serve as a retreat and walking path through the city. The stairs leading to the river and the buildings flanking it are hives of activity and density. The architecture is arranged to capitalize on the views, environmental factors, and change in elevation. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
