About The Artwork

This painting was created for the exhibition 'Travel App' at Fokianou Art Space in Athens. The exhibition explored how travel had changed during the pandemic and lockdown. For me, the lockdown was a great opportunity to explore further the abstract creative route, and so, I embarked on a series of abstract works. One of them, was this work, which is the largest work in a three-part series ('Unchartered Waters 1, 2 and 3). I named this series 'Unchartered Waters', because not only was this my dive into the 'unchartered waters' of abstraction, but also, the times we are navigating at the moment, with the pandemic, are also unchartered waters for our society. We might feel lost, or very small, like the little boat in the painting, navigating this unkown dreamscape, or abstract seascape/landscape. Nevertheless, we have to persist and carry on as best we can! The pandemic put humans into perspective within the grand scheme of things. Before the pandemic, we were rather full of ourselves! We have been reminded once again, of that Socratean frame of mind: all we know, is that we know nothing! Nevertheless, we still have to continue. In essence this work is an abstract landscape/seascape inspired by nature. I always return to nature! Nature is our teacher.

Born and raised in London, studied Art, English Literature and History of Art at Harrow College of Art, Lancaster University and Reading University, then moved to Athens, Greece in 1994. Nature has always inspired me in my art, and I'm forever learning from this great teacher. We need to connect with nature in whatever way we can, even through art. Apart from my art practice, I'm also a freelance journalist/art critic. I have been covering the Greek art scene since I moved to Greece. I run the site Art Scene Athens, (www.artsceneathens.com, also on fb). You can see more of my work on my site: www.stellasevastopoulos.com, or on my fb page
