About The Artwork

Subject: The New Cathedral, Cuenca, Ecuador Description: This work depicts the brick ornamentation on the columns of the New Cathedral in Cuenca Ecuador. Here the recurring barrel arch reinforces the circular motifs used elsewhere. In local Cañari and Incan culture, the circle is a strong symbol of the heavens, earth, and these people’s understanding of time and depiction of the calendar. I was struck by how in using the circle prominently, the local culture is honored and unified with new ideas of Catholicism helping to make the building representative of its place and people. This work is one of several works that represent different aspects of the New Cathedral complete with the intention that they can be paired up for display as a diptych or triptych. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio
