Below the sky, past the waters edge, under the trees, family heritage is rooted in that sandy clay earth.

This is one of my original abstract paintings inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountain landscape during winter.

This collection of work is based on principles of using familiar imagery and cracking them out to reveal other abstract more intuitive truths. The paintings are done on wood panels that provide a sufficiently rigid support for me to apply a riot of color and a rather aggressive application of mediums. Over time, these original pieces are built up in layers, and when I add a new layer, it is almost inevitable that I will scrape part of it off, or even dissolve almost the whole thing back. Quite often my main aim is to explore how the painting is created, its intricate details, textures and imperfections, rather than focusing solely on what it represents.

I tend to change styles and subjects frequently while toeing the line between representation and abstraction. The work always begins with a specific idea in my mind, but all that goes out the window once I'm seduced by the process.
