Untitled#2. Mixed Media on Wood Panel, 2022. 12"x60"X1.5" Honoring the Guna Yala tribe. There are three segments on this art piece. The first one (far left) represents the Guna Yala's Women because is a matriarch society. The second segment (middle one) represents the ocean, because fishing is their main food source. And the third one (far right) represents the Mola. Guna Yala, also known as San Blas: an archipelago off Panama’s eastern coast that contains more than 300 islands, 49 of which are inhabited by the indigenous Guna people. More than 50,000 strong, the Gunas still live as their ancestors did, dwelling in small wooden shacks covered with palm leaves, with logs smouldering in the fireplaces and hammocks representing the only furniture. A Panama Guna Yala Mola is a traditional garment of the Guna Yala women, but it is really a piece of art! In the Guna people’s mother tongue, the Dulegaya, “mola” means clothing like shirt or blouse. The tradition of the Guna Yala Mola comes from the traditional designs Guna Yala women used to PAINT on their bodies (this is when there were no textiles at hand, these came later with the Spanish conquistadors). These colorful geometrical designs were later transferred on sewn pieces of cloth using a technique known as “reverse application”. In short, it is sewing two or more pieces of cloth together and then start cutting from the top layer to the bottom layer, revealing a beautiful colorful design that turns to be unique! No two Molas are exactly the same. Note: Due to the photo shooting lighting or the users' screen brightness, a slight color difference in the actual artwork after printing on canvas is normal.
