Mateo Roybal is a painter from Las Vegas New Mexico, currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Highlands University. The works created are generally responsive to the abstract expressionist of the 20th century, and are large scale expressive works. These works are created with the intention of evoking primal emotions within the willing viewer. —Artist Statement— The paintings were produced within a traditional format, as rectangles comprised of stretched canvas and acrylic paint. Within this anonymous frame their abstract subject matter consists of representations of subconscious interior spaces. The implication of intense emotion becomes visible through rough edges, gestural strokes, hasty mark-making and vertical forms that cut through the compositions adding force and energy. Along with the textural surface of these works, expressive colors are implemented to further evoke primal human feelings which are genuinely expressed by the artist. For him the physical process of painting inspires the release of intense emotion that infects the work and gives it life, movement and vibration.
