ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting is part of a series entitled Under Pressure. Created during the Covid-19 summer lockdown of 2020, the artwork shares the style and techniques seen in the series' other pieces, such as broad and expressive brush strokes; bold colours—here being somewhere between mustard and turmeric—combined with its human subject, often depicted in a reduced, simplified form composed of spontaneous strokes of black. In this work, the postures of its human subjects, sat closely with heads tilted towards the ground— along with the piece's composition— seem to communicate a period of sorrow, mourning or solemn reflection.

Nabil Abou Hamad is a British-Lebanese visual artist primarily active as a painter in oil, acrylic and mixed media. He is one of the last surviving members of the 1960s "Artists of the Horseshoe" circle—a gathering of visual artists who frequented the Horseshoe café in Beirut's Hamra street during the city's heyday as the Middle East's hub of free expression, liberal lifestyles and intellectualism. Still active and prolific in output, Nabil's œuvre to date spans six decades of work, fluctuating between periods of experimentation in styles that range from the fauvist, to the primitivist, to the abstract expressionist and their hybrids.
