ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is a painting that I resisted making for a year. After researching the hidden history of Black jockeys in the origins of the Kentucky Derby, the image of a group of finely dressed men struck me deeply upon my first discovery. Long held ideas of inheritance culturally shaped my resistance. Upon deciding to paint this work as an attempt to challenge my usually colorful works, much healing and resolve came forth.
