ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Painting: Acrylic, printing ink and Airbrush on Paper. "Upward mobility" depicts multiple figures toward the base of the composition. These figures represent a sense of calm when combined with the rhythmic and gestural marks that populate the rest of the composition. Their is a violence within the chaos of the markings and suppressed figures but they suggestively point upward. This series combines the looseness of mono-printing with the more controlled qualities of acrylic paint and silk screen. Through this process wonderfully saturated colors are produced and a dialogue that explores the interwoven layers of symbolism and technique is established. This series draws great inspiration from the inventive drawing techniques developed by the surrealists that promoted unpredictable and not entirely controllable process. Carlson Hatton Lives and works in Los Angeles and received a BFA from the Cooper Union in NYC. He moved to the Netherlands for a post graduate program in Amsterdam at de'Ateliers and later continued on to a studio arts laureate program at the Jan van Eyck Academie in the city of Maastricht. He is a full-time professor of art at Santa Monica College. Hatton has had solo exhibitions at Patrick Painter and Ruth Bachhofner Gallery has additionally exhibited at Shoshana Wayne Gallery, The Torrance Art Museum, The Carnegie Art Museum, de Appel Arts Centre in Amsterdam, Gallerie Nouvelles Images in The Hague, The Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, and has an upcoming public Art installation along the Expo Line in Los Angeles. Hatton's complexly layered compositions challenge a fixed point of view and consider how our visual experiences are informed by memory, intuition, and emotional response. His unique fusions of drawing, printmaking and painting deliver a strong sense of psychedelia and ask to be deciphered by a viewer.
