About The Artwork

Subject: Teatro Antico Greco-Romano, Catania, Italy Description: This painting depicts the Teatro Antico Greco-Romano in Catalina, Sicily. The Greeks originally utilized a natural hill in the landscape to construct the theater which was later expanded by the Romans. Following the 1693 earthquake that destroyed most of the city, the theater was used as the foundation for residential buildings. The theater was rediscovered in the 18th century but not cleared of the structures built into it until 1959. It is once again a working theater and exists as one piece within a fragmented landscape shaped by urban life since the 2nd century AD. I was struck by the disjointed nature of the constructions and how a simple hill has over time become such a complicated landscape shaped by opportunity, ingenuity, and community. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
