My painting Valla Beach Seashells was inspired by a recent visit to Northern New South Wales. Valla Beach is in the Nambucca Valley, on the mid north coast of New South Wales, 35 kilometres south of Coffs Harbour. Valla Beach is well known for Dolphins and you will also see Humpback whales during their migrations north and south. It is also a great beach for surfing. The beautiful beach is great for looking for shells and driftwood, and admiring the interesting rock pools and landforms, including a huge cave. The prized cowrie shells can be found washed up on the previous high tide. My painting does not depict cowrie shells. However, I love their story. Cowrie shells represent Goddess protection which is very powerful and connected with the strength of the ocean. Cowrie shells are also worn as jewellery or otherwise used as ornaments or charms. They are viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth. Shell money became the most commonly used means of payment of the trading nations of the Old World. The cowry was accepted in large parts of Asia, Africa, Oceania and in some scattered places in Europe

AUSTRALIAN ARTIST I am an Australian artist working in Adelaide, South Australia. I paint mostly in oil, but occasionally use acrylic paints. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, flower paintings and abstract paintings are included in my repertoire of work. INSPIRATION FOR MY ART As an Australian artist, my inspiration comes from whatever is around me at a particular time. As an example, following a recent trip to the mid north of South Australia, I produced a series of landscape paintings, which include the beautiful Eucalyptus trees and flowers from local gardens. HISTORY My original study was textile design and Adelaide's School of Art and Craft. I then worked for 20 years in various forms of art and fashion. But, in 1997 I followed my other passion, natural health. Since arriving back in Adelaide from Sydney in 1999 I have worked full time as a Naturopath. However, in recent years I have devoted much more time to my painting. Moving full circle, as a practicing Australian artist. This includes participating in exhibitions. Also fulfilling my love of learning by continuing to study and improve my art practice, wherever and whenever I can. Over this period I have attended many and varied art courses and workshops in this time including Peter Bok at Bapea Art School, Liana Vargas Cat Leonard, and Krystina at Splashout Studio, Chelsea Lehman, Trena Everuss and Nona Burden at Adelaide Central School, John Lacey, Ruby Chew, Sophie Hann, Gerhard Ritter, and Deborah Trusson. WHERE ELSE TO FIND ME I regularly post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
