I began with a boat... and then it turned, turned again, and I just kept painting on the same watercolour paper. This is one of many smaller studies towards a large painting of gondolas. Enjoy!

My goal is to lift you up, take you on a journey of discovery, and I don’t publish my works until I’d be happy living with that painting for the rest of my life, stranded on a lone island (which is almost the case, in England!) I study my subjects from all possible angles, finding new ways of seeing, and layers of meaning. During the pandemic there was much time for self-reflection, thinking about the meaning and frailty of life, our role and responsibility in nature. So I turned my attention from cityscapes towards landscapes, treating it as a semi-abstract challenge, giving hints but allowing the viewer to finish the image by imagination. My favourite Impressionist is John Peter Russell, a master of colour at par with the greatest names. with Italian master is Caravaggio--his dynamism, intense focus, daring contours and ability to guide your gaze around and around his works till you feel you're in it. I work somewhere between Impressionism and Expressionism, and with the strong colours of fauvism. It is like playing jazz: you have to know classical music to get it right, to know what are the basic notes you can disregard, relying on your audience's trained ears to supply the missing bits, to create the harmonies out of the clues you give them. Or like storytelling: you leave out the boring and obvious, keeping and focusing on the contrasts, the interesting, the startling. Enjoy!
