About The Artwork

I was brainstorming different ways to approach this project and it was exciting and a bit brain bending at first. I was focused on trying to interpret Van Gogh in a contemporary context. What I love about his work is his intensity and his ability to convey beauty and pain. Everything is always turned all the way up and that radiates out from his canvases. It made me think about a quote from a Nicholas Hornby book where he talks about how you can just hear the pain in Nick Drake’s voice when he sings. So I started coming up with a musical muse for each self portrait. Sometimes including lyrics, references to cover art, I wanted it to be a bit of a game for the viewer to figure out who each piece is referencing. This piece is based off of a lyric from Sleater-Kinney's song Jumpers and is a reference to what is often quoted as Robert Frost statement "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." that he never actually said. The background is based off of a polaroid I took at the house grew up in during winter. The blues and creeping bare branches have always conjured the sadness and isolation winter can bring. Jumpers Lyrics: I spend the afternoon in cars I sit in traffic jams for hours Don't push me, I am not OK The sky is blue most every day The lemons grow like tumors they Are tiny suns infused with sour Lonely as a cloud In the Golden State The coldest winter that I ever saw was The summer that I spent
