About The Artwork

Viking funerals are known both from archaeology and from historical accounts such as the Icelandic sagas and Old Norse poetry. Vikings believed that death would lead them into an afterlife and into one of the Vikings nine realms. Before the age of Christianity, Vikings would bury the deceased with their belongings, often lying in a boat or a wagon to make the journey to the next world easier. A Viking funeral pyre could get hot enough to cremate a body and reduce it to bones and ashes. The ashes would be placed in an urn or carved box for burial.
