ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Volcanoes or a Study of Women, remembrances of recent eruptions. There are today some 1,500 potentially active volcanoes around the world. This force of nature, named after the Roman god of fire Vulcan, is one of the forces of nature that truly are beyond human power to control. Volcanoes erupt because of density and pressure. Mostly silent, always resilient, we can hardly predict its outbursts as it is impossible to prevent its eruptions. It fertilises the soil but also kills, yet, we are drawn by the power of this fire-spitting giantess. Early readers were already fascinated by Volcanoes and pictorial descriptions of these magnificent eruptions appeared quite frequently in 18th-century periodicals. Today, Amy Donovan, a geographer at the University of Cambridge, examined the rising interest in volcanoes in recent decades and tried to explain our attraction to eruptions: "People are drawn by the power of volcanoes, I think – it is more than a spectacle, but rather an experience." The latest eruption in Saudi Arabia was at the volcanic field (Harraat) of Jabal Yar, it took place in 1810 (give or take 10 years). It was a small explosive eruption that produced lava flows. The series 'Volcanoes' are a remembrance to actual eruptions of various volcanoes we have seen around our world the last years. About the technique: polycromia is an old medieval technique based on pure pigments on gold or silver foil and historically used on ceilings, walls and sculptures. Preparing the canvas for the foil requires several layers. After, the pigments must be mixed with a very precise amount of exclusively natural materials (ingredients as you also would find 500+ years ago) and put on the prepared canvas. Now, the scratching away can start and finally it will be fixed to make it permanent. In short: a revival of a medieval technique applied in a contemporary way. Sizes: 100cm X 100cm / 100cm x 120cm / 200cm X 300cm, or commissioned sizes. 100cm. Prints available until 80cm X 80cm Volcano Of Emotion, poem by Coreena Dejesus Screaming in the inside, Filled with hate and rage. Appearance lovely from the outside, Emotions are locked in a cage. Agony that you have caused, I've been mistreated and used, Tears and screams placed on pause, My heart mishandled and no doubt abused. I'm like a volcano ready to explode, Eruptions and heat flames unbearable, You hurt me you'll get what is owed. Emotions will fly actions will be terrible. The anger building waiting to escape, Time will pass and it will increase, You'll see every emotion in every shape, All my angry and hate upon you I'll release, My wrath will come I will set you straight. Till then I sit here contemplating- patiently I wait. March 2008 (Dedicated to Vernon Burchett)
