ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Series 31 #28 Waiting for Irene 8 x 10 2020 Acrylic on Canvas ------- All paintings in Series 31 incorporate high quality traditional media including acrylic paint, pigment-based India inks, and graphite. The canvas is El Greco absorbent ground canvas. The stretched canvas has a depth of .75 inches, and is framed in a natural (unfinished) wood frame that brings the overall depth to 1.5 inches, with an overall height of 11 inches and a width of 9 inches. The back of the frame is wired, and hanging hardware is included. I work on these paintings flat, store them in an archival box with layers of ph-neutral interleaving paper, then stretch and frame them once they are sold. For a $50 discount, please ask to have these works shipped flat (unstretched/unframed). Each work is signed on the front with my initials, and on the bottom edge with my initials, last name, date completed, and the series number. This work ships in a cardboard box. The painting is covered with acid-free glassine paper, wrapped with bubble wrap, sealed in plastic, nested between two pieces of foam board and/or corrugated cardboard shipping inserts, and placed in a sturdy shipping box. ------- My works represent a constant outpouring of singular impressions: clearly isolated images that capture flashes of emotion, changes in perception, or moments of recognition. I give fleeting thoughts as much consideration as monumental ideas: nothing is more important than anything else and every small thing has its place. My process is modeled after the methods of improvisational theater. I make a first mark, then ask myself, “if this is true, what else is true?” I repeat this process with the addition of each new element, using personal experience to shape the final image. Each image represents an isolated narrative, yet all the images together tell a larger story. My accountability for the truth and permanence of this story is an important part of my identity as an artist. This is why I make all my works in sequential series, and never destroy or hide any of them.
