About The Artwork

As I drive around Los Angeles I often see discarded furniture that has been placed at the sidewalk edge. Generally it is not to litter the street but rather to up-cycle the furniture to someone who could use it in their own lives. I am attracted to this idea for several reasons. I love to up cycle - it’s less stuff that ends up in the garbage. The idea that there is an unwritten “code” that if you place a piece of furniture out in front of your house it becomes an impromptu marketplace where it may very well disappear with in the hour. It also speaks to a human aspect, where you get to see a little bit of someone’s life anonymously put out in public for all to see. I can’t remember if it was these chairs exactly when I came across this scene several years ago, but I love the idea of lawn furniture placed out front of a house with what seems like intention to relax on them and watch the world go by.

Alex Selkowitz is a fine art oil painter who resides in Los Angeles, CA. After spending decades in the film industry as a lighting technician he has brought his knowledge of light, shadows and composition to his passion of fine art. He is inspired by the bright Southern California light and colorful sunsets. His subjects range from dense urban concrete environments to the sprawl of suburbia littered with green spaces. Common everyday human made objects occupy his paintings which represent the human presence but his paintings typically are devoid of any humans. Painting in an impressionistic style his artworks evoke a calm liminal feeling and a dream like quality.
