About The Artwork

Among my en plain air paintings, this is one of the ones that satisfies me the most. I waited out the Summer storm and rushed to the river before the sunset. Once chosen the view to paint, I carefully studied the composition and framing. Only then did I quickly sketch the design and paint with more confident brushstrokes than usual. I was initially sketching an underpainting, but then I realized that those fresh and expressive brushstrokes worked "alla prima". I finished with the very last lights before sunset, then cleaned my palette, gathered my things, and walked back to my car in total darkness. This painting is inspired by Corot's riverside views, which I was studying at the time, but i think that the way I painted it is more reminiscent of Impressionism - a movement I have always appreciated since I was a child. I chose to represent this landscape without too many details, and not to sign the painting on the front so that the doubt may always arise that it is being observed upside down. I like the idea that reality isn't necessarily how we perceive it, and that its reflection can mingle with it to such an extent as to raise the doubt that perhaps reality is what we consider the reflection itself. This painting is made on a plywood poplar board, prepared by the artist with traditional "gesso" primer made of rabbit-skin glue and Bologna gypsum. After complete drying, it was finished and protected with final varnish. The board is also painted on the edges. It already has a hook and can be hung with or without a frame. It is sold without a frame. It is sold with a certificate of authenticity.

Enrico Giulia (1983) was born in Rome - Italy, where he still lives, and received his education across Italy, the Netherlands and Japan. His keen humanistic interests led him to obtain a PhD in Cultures of Africa and Asia (2013) while focusing on philosophy and religions. These are reflected in his aesthetic and poetic research in painting. Said research is for him an instrument of exploration and representation of what escapes univocal verbal definitions, such as the unfathomable character of being, and of the qualities of the sacred. Deeply fascinated by the Symbolist movement of painting, Enrico is currently focusing on creating images from personal visions and inner imagery. In order to do this, he draws inspiration from natural places and often starts his new paintings en plein air, surrounded by unspoiled nature, and finishes them in the studio . His subject matter mainly revolves around the themes of the unfathomable and the indecipherable in the individual and in nature, and in the relationship between the two. Enrico is an enthusiastic supporter of the recent revival of traditional painting techniques. Embracing this, he constantly studies, reproduces and draws inspiration from the great oil Masters in art history: from Raphael, Leonardo and Titian, to Rembrandt, Corot and Waterhouse. A lover of gentle lines and harmony in shapes and colours, he considers himself to be an aesthete, and is always looking to create shapes and compositions that please the eye and invite the mind to explore and wander.
