About The Artwork

The rainbow is a fascinating painting phenomenon and a symbol of hope, it brings light and peace. I've been watching rainbows a lot more since I moved to the seaside. It is an amazing sight of the union of water and sun. Its transience and, above all, a special kind of glowing with all colors is a challenge for me. How to paint an immaterial phenomenon with material pigments? I study soft transitions with sfumato, and other times I look for the sensation of glow, this vibration through the splitting of color patches. In this painting I focused on the impression of vibrating colors of the spectrum, which I obtained with the help of dots. The softly passing colors of the rainbow are divided into single spots, they mix, and the eye itself unifies the plane, as in pointillist paintings.

I move between different styles, combining abstraction with figuration. Concerning themes and my color palette, I have no restrictions, with one exception: I avoid dramatism in depicted situations. Only the scale between extensive backgrounds and minor human figures or vehicles is constant. I am inspired by Dutch painting, especially by Peter Breughel. I like to think of my paintings as a kind of poetry without words. http://www.artminnow.com/index.php/2017/04/14/a-conversation-with-grazyna-smalej/
