Art Description

Painting: Oil and Paint on Canvas.

This painting depicts an enigmatic narrative. A young girl bathes in a dark bog surrounded by snow, with two young men with dog heads looking on. The painting is based upon the story of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet, the tragic girl who drowns herself in a brook after Hamlet rejects her. In addition, the painting references the story of Suzanna and the Elders from the bible, a popular subject for old master painters, who depicted a young girl bathing being watched by older men.
