ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What remains It is in essence a reflection on life and death. I have taken as a reference the symbol of vanity, very common in 17th century baroque painting, which was represented by a skull that signified the presence of death. No matter how much wealth you accumulate in life, how much social recognition you have, you are still going to die.Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. My reflection does not have a pessimistic sense like this idea, but I deal with the subject from the point of view that life and death are part of the same entity and not as separate facts. Life belongs to death and death to life, since we are born every day cells die in our body and others are born, in our environment the same thing happens with plants and insects is a constant cycle of renewal of life through death. I use dead wood as a metaphor instead of a skull because for me it illustrates this fact better. Wood is a living material that in its dead state has served utilitarian purposes throughout human history. With wood is made the cradle where we sleep after birth, the bed where we reproduce and the coffin where we die. I chose the medium of oil painting for its flexibility and versatility, oil has a special characteristic of flow, that is to say that in the brushstroke it behaves differently from other media and flows over the surface in a poetic way. Watercolor paper has a different absorption capacity than other surfaces and gives oil a solid character. The colors of red sanguine, dark charcoal and white have an antecedent in the history of art in the drawing a trois crayons of 18th century France, the lights century where the joy of living is condensed with reason and science and represented in art. What remains is an analysis of a fact that escapes my comprehension and is an approach to be able to deal with a reality that corresponds to all of us.
