About The Artwork

In July 2023, when my city Kharkiv was not under bombardment, I walked along the central streets. In the most respectable district of Kharkiv, boys and girls aged 7-8 were playing cops and robbers. To my surprise, none of these playing boys wanted to be a policeman. All these boys wanted to be robbers in this game. In my childhood, me and my friends wanted to be policemen and detectives. None of us wanted to play as robbers. I pondered for a long time why in the 21st century children from good families want to be criminals. The result of my contemplations became the painting "When I Grow Up". This painting depicts a boy who dreams of becoming a mafia boss and leading a criminal lifestyle. In my opinion, the desire of boys to become criminals arose due to the constant propaganda in the global cinema, rap music, and the internet promoting the criminal lifestyle. I believe that all parents should be involved in educating their sons and explaining that being a criminal is dangerous and not prestigious! I want every viewer of this painting to understand and feel the danger of the influence of propaganda promoting the criminal lifestyle on the impressionable minds of children. In creating this painting, I was inspired by 2 works of great artists from the past: "The Assault of Robbers" by Pieter Bruegel the Younger in 1615 and "The Blue Boy" by Thomas Gainsborough in 1770.

My artistic alias is Art Mag, residing in Kharkiv city, Ukraine. Armed with an art education from the esteemed Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, I proudly represent Ukrainian contemporary art as a versatile artist, sculptor, and jeweler. My artistic journey is a fusion of intellectual surrealism, sculpting masterpieces from precious metals, and crafting luxury jewelry for both men and women. Through my work, I aim to articulate the complexities of modern existence in the 21st century. Rooted in the traditions of the 19th-century French academic painting school, my creations delve into thought-provoking narratives, exploring themes of freedom and human psychology. Influenced by the pioneering works of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Cesare Lombroso, I infuse powerful archetypes and contemporary symbols into my art. My oeuvre encompasses a diverse cast of characters, ranging from religious figures like Jesus Christ to mythical beings such as Lucifer, alongside modern icons like financial magnates and artificial intelligence. Yet, amidst this eclectic mix, I strive for clarity, eschewing fantastical imagery for more accessible forms reminiscent of Paul Delvaux and René Magritte. Each painting displayed on this platform bears witness to a tumultuous period in Ukrainian history, painted amidst the chaos of war from March 2022 to November 2023. Despite the constant threat of enemy bombardment, I persevered, drawing inspiration from the adversity of my surroundings. Much like Picasso in wartime Paris, I risked life and limb to produce captivating surrealist works that speak to the resilience of the human spirit amidst conflict. I am a Ukrainian contemporary artist, sculptor, and jeweler. I paint pictures in the style of (intellectual) surrealism, create sculptures from precious metals, and make luxury jewelry for men and women. "I enjoy expressing my thoughts and ideas about the modern human and their real life in the 21st century through surrealism." I create my paintings in the traditions of the 19th-century French academic painting school. All of my paintings have floor-provoking and provocative plots, imbued with the spirit of absolute freedom. My work has been greatly influenced by the scientific works of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Cesare Lombroso on psychology and human behavior. In the plots of my paintings, I use powerful archetypes (elements of the collective unconscious) and the main symbols of the modern world.
