About The Artwork

The somber expression on her face intrigued me to use an oval canvas and create a fragmented portrait. I hope viewers will be drawn to her feeling of possible despair or conflict. The fragments add to her lonely appearance. She looks to be unsure. The doily stenciled thought bubbles create a sense that she might have sad or empty places her mind may go. Her thoughts float away. Finding this stretched oval canvas inspired me to create this portrait. My fragmented style worked out well including the wooden ball frame I created. Each ball is nailed to the cavas frame to complete the decorative piece.

Julie Martin is a contemporary artist living in Northeast Ohio drawn to portraiture and figurative subjects depicting mystery, emotion and attitude. With a background in graphic design, the Denver, Colorado born artist also pursued a passion of painting. The process of rearranging slices of realistic images pushes boundaries to create new intriguing abstract artworks. "I take the rearranged slices printed or digital, and create from that as reference. I do not paint, then cut up the canvas." The definition of juxtaposition - The act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect. "I’m inspired by the way the slices come together and are transformed into a new visual painted by my imagination.” With a defined fragmented style, she’s created something compelling that is her own.
