While You Weren't Looking Painting

Sometimes when painting, the best things happen when I am trying the least. I painted this piece side-by-side with a commission I was working on. It shares the same color palette, but other than that it is very different. I was intently focused on the commissioned piece, and this painting practically painted itself. It was a breakthrough for me, and guided the direction of my recent "Carved" series. I appreciate how much white space there is for the eyes to rest, and to give attention to the passages that I found most interesting. ............ The Carved collection is as much a practice in discernement as it is a body of work. A reflection of the choices we make in how we spend our days, and what we allow into our lives. Without discernment and careful choice there is only chaos and clutter. Each painting in the series required me to consider the moments and gestures I loved best, and to let the others go. To let go of good to make room for great. Each piece has left room for consideration and rest. To be a reminder to us all to leave room in our lives for the things we love most.
