ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"In her recent exhibitions, culminating notably in The Light Within You at the Vernon Art Gallery (2019) in B.C., for which this writer contributed the catalogue text, Thompson has revealed herself as a seeker after depth. She has offered cohesive and salient selections of her body of non-objective paintings related to monochromism and the colour field painting movement. But hers’ is no historicist agenda and the paintings do not look in any way dated or indebted. They are phenomenally fresh. These paintings are part of an integral continuing investigation of chromaticity at its most convincing and sophisticated." - Joseph Campbell, Canadian Art Critic To create my "monochromes" I use a technique similar to mandala sand painting. I dip a small fan brush into paint and tap it against a stick to create delicate dots and splatters. For hours, I tap until the canvas is covered with layers of lines and flecks. The resulting image is a homogenous field – an energized labyrinth of patterns, lines, and vibrations. I may paint a dark border around this field to contain its movement. From a distance the monochromes appear orderly and unified. Yet up close, they reveal chaotic patterns and particles moving in all directions like matter spinning in space. The monochromes express my molecular reality – the reality manifesting as bodily sensations pulsating, throbbing, prickling, tingling, and manifesting inside me. My hope is that while the viewer gazes at the field of vibrating color, he or she will become aware sensations and their own reality.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, a soothing calming influence on the mind rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” - - Henri Matisse. Inspired by Matisse’s artistic quest to uplift and energise the viewer, I strive to create light and colour filled paintings that illuminate, soothe and vitalise the human spirit. Perhaps my appreciation for abstraction comes from living in Canada surrounded by mountains, lakes, sky and forests. Nature continually presents me with soothing colours, exciting designs, delightful patterns, intriguing patinas and infinite space. Nature presents light, dark, shadows and movement which evoke emotions of mystery, wonder and love. My goal as a painter is to use nature’s abstract elements like colour and space to capture a particular feeling, a feeling of unity, passion or peacefulness. I strive to create painterly abstractions that mysteriously resonate with my deeper self and hopefully with the soul of the viewer. I believe art is a way to communicate one soul to another.
