Yu He

About the Artist

Yu He

France

Born in Qingdao in 1976 into a scholarly Manchu family, with ancestral roots in Qingzhou. She began studying traditional Chinese ink painting at the age of eight, initially learning to depict trumpet creepers under the guidance of Mr. Tan Nailin, now a well-known Chinese ink painter. This early training became the starting point of her artistic path and remains one of her most cherished formative experiences.

During her university studies in the Fine Arts department, driven by curiosity about Western art, she chose oil painting as her major. She later traveled to Scotland to study contemporary art. These cross-cultural academic and life experiences gradually broadened her artistic vision and led her toward a more open and pluralistic way of thinking.

She worked in China as an art educator. Teaching subjects such as art history and graphic design etc. After ten years devoted to teaching, she returned to painting itself, shifting her creative focus back to the use of traditional Chinese painting materials. Her works incorporate classical media such as brush, ink, and paper, as well as mineral pigments derived from the ancient Dunhuang murals of China. She continues to experiment with various types of paper, embracing uncertainty in the creative process; this ongoing exploration and trial have become an essential part of her artistic practice.

She currently lives and works in France, where she continues her painting practice. Much of her artistic engagement stems from a fascination with the interactions and transformations between ink, water, paper, pigments, and paint, as well as from an inward, contemplative spiritual experience. Her sustained investigation of materials and techniques fuels her creative passion. Nature is an important sources of inspiration for her, and she hopes her works can offer viewers a sense of warmth and inner comfort—an intention that has gradually become a central direction of her ongoing practice.
