About The Artwork

This painting describes the precarious existence of the beautiful Whiteinch Library in Glasgow. The council want to close it despite it being a much loved and long standing local asset. The painting shows the last reader in the last library balancing on a chair over a precipice while the sky glows with a dying evening light. I wanted the veiwer to feel the quiet sadness of a future in doubt. The old newspaper stands, the glass topped tables, and the bentwood chairs all evoke a place receding into the past. There is, however, a glimmer of hope that the community can persuade the authorities to relent. The library might still be saved.
