The inspiration for this work was JMW Turner's 'Venice: looking across the lagoon 1840". On holiday in Whitstable I did a number of watercolour studies while watching the sunset over the Thames estuary and this work was done in the studio in acrylic, based on those studies. I wanted to capture the warm glow of the sunset and the wide horizon.

Having been a frustrated painter for many years while I made a living, I went to art school (Chelsea College of Art, London) when I got a chance - as a very mature student! My inspiration comes from the things I see around me, either at home in London or while travelling. Subjects for my current paintings include street scenes in London, India, Kew Gardens and the Scottish Highlands.
