Inspiration for my work comes from many walks along flowerfields (tulips), in heathlands and polders in The Netherlands and rugged mountainous regions in Scandinavia and the Alps. The paintings have a great clarity of colour and focus on landscape features, such as the flatness of the Dutch scenery. Some paintings are almost abstract, such as the Boundary series, started in 1998. This shows a figurative language bordering on geometry, using a minimal amount of paint. These paintings are a formal approach to landscape, to paint the essence of landscape, to be aware of light, spatiality, silence, immateriality and emptiness in landscape. I am constantly reducing and simplifying elements of the landscape, making them more schematic and conceptual, as well as much flatter. I allow myself great variety within the context of landscape. I also create floor and wall objects, presenting surfaces of brightly coloured pigment on the ground or wall-mounted linen. Geometric shapes, such as the rectangle and the oval, predominate. Other paintings are precisely abstracted translations of feelings and experiences during the walks: the grandeur of nature, immateriality, emptiness, colours or spatiality. Painted with professional top-quality Rembrandt oilpaint, Winsor and Newton Artists Oil colour and Old Holland Scheveningen Old Masters oilpaint. Ready to hang, a frame is not needed. Painted on high quality canvas, stretched on a high quality wooden stretcher frame. Education: Academy of Arts Sint Joost Breda The Netherlands. Diploma of Higher Education 1987. I graduated cum laude. Museums: I exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Breda Netherlands (2018 and 2019) and the Jan Cunen Museum Oss Netherlands. Inspiration for my work comes from my many walks along flower- and tulip fields, along the North Sea coast, in polders, heathlands and forests in the Netherlands and rugged mountainous regions such as Jotunheimen in Norway and the Mont Blanc massif. I work both figurative and abstract, and on the boundary of abstraction and figuration, in different styles and with different subjects – I take that freedom as an artist, it's also about the pleasure of making art. But the works of art always have to do with nature and the landscape. Info: More information can be found on my website: Matthieu van Riel. Education: 1983-1987 Painting, drawing and monumental design. Graduated laude.
