Art Description

Painting: Ink, Gesso, copper gilding, Paint on Canvas.

This piece has developed partly in response to Woman of the Apocalypse composed by Sir James MacMillan and premiered in the UK at the end of 2015. I made drawings during rehearsals and used these as the basis for many studies, culminating in this painting.
The 13 dots of copper gilding reference the Woman's 12 stars as described in the Book of Revelations. I added one more as 13 was my mother's lucky number.
The mark-making is energetic yet carefully considered; once a brush stroke has been made it can not be removed. The stakes are high.
the interplay of ink with matt and chalky gesso fascinates as it changes character once dry.
